A native New
Englander with an undergraduate degree in history from Bates College
and graduate work at Boston University, Peter Fisk has been building
harpsichords for twenty-three years. Although he lived and worked
in Denton, Texas for some years, Peter currently maintains shops in
both Stonington, Connecticut and Norwich, Vermont, where he builds
harpsichords in Italian, Flemish, and French traditions.
His many quality instruments are to be found in private use as well as public collections such as:
Smith College
Harvard University
Providence College
Holyoke College
Santa Fe Opera
University of Oklahoma
University of North Texas
A Fisk harpsichord is constructed with attention to the tradition
of the early European builders. We didn’t begin building fine harpsichords
in this country until we paid greater attention to the craft of the
old masters. At the same time, a Fisk harpsichord is designed and
built to better withstand the ravages of a hostile environment: heating
systems that dry furniture to the cracking point, intense, two-week
rainy spells, and the inclination of players to cart the instruments
anywhere.
Reconciling the old tradition with the American environment and ending up with an instrument that is a delight to the ear and begs to be played is what Peter Fisk has been able to do, and it is precisely the reason that you would want to own one.
A Note on Collaboration:
This whole process of building and decorating a harpsichord is one
of collaboration, not just the builder with the artist but also the
client with the builder with the artist. Every customer for whom we
have built and decorated a harpsichord has taken some pleasure in
being part of the creative process. Bill is particularly effective
in working out motifs, layouts, and overall designs with clients.
The end result is something the client recognizes as an instrument
that he or she had a hand in completing.
